Getting married - Marriage licences
Congratulations on your upcoming marriage! Whether you are planning a grand affair or a simple one, there are some important steps that you must complete. Getting a marriage licence is a key step in the process.
You can get a marriage licence application online or from any municipal office in the province. To get the licence, you must meet the requirements, fill out the form, and one or both of you must go in person to a Registry Services office.
Requirements
The application form
Visit the Service Ontario website for a marriage licence application, or pick one up at a Registry Services office. The marriage application form must be completed and signed by both applicants.
Identification
Any one of the following identity documents must be presented for each person. Identity documents must be original; photocopies will not be accepted.
Birth certificate
Valid Passport
Valid Driver's licence
Canadian citizenship card
Canadian Government refugee travel document
Conditional release identification card
United States green card
Native status card
Record of immigration landing
Citizenship card from any country
Age requirements
Both partners must be 18 years of age or older. If you are 16 or 17 years of age, parental consent is required. Please contact the Registry Services Office at 416-392-7036 for further information. If you are under the age of 16 years you may not marry in the Province of Ontario.
Gender
The City of Toronto issues marriage licences to all eligible couples. Same-sex couples have been receiving licences since June 11, 2003, following the June 10, 2003 Ontario Court of Appeal decision making same-sex marriages legal in Ontario.
Citizenship/Residency
There are no citizenship or residency requirements when applying for a marriage licence in Ontario.
Medical requirements
Blood tests or medical certificates are not required for a marriage licence in Ontario.
Marriage after divorce
Canadian Divorce: If you were divorced in Canada, you must provide the original or a court-certified copy (photocopies not accepted) of your certificate of divorce, or Decree Absolute. A certified copy of your certificate of divorce may be obtained from the court office that granted the divorce. Please note that a Judgement issued by the Court is not acceptable proof of divorce.
Foreign Divorce: If you were divorced, or your marriage was dissolved or annulled outside of Canada, please request additional forms, which provide further information and instructions. A foreign divorce kit will be provided to you outlining the steps required to proceed. Note: You will forward the completed kit to the Province of Ontario, Minister of Government Services for authorization. This process could take up to 4 weeks to complete. You must get authorization from the Minister of Government Services before a marriage licence can be issued to you.
Contact our office at (416) 392-7036 or visit Service Ontario or call 416-325-8305 to learn how to obtain this authorization.
Publications of banns
A marriage may be solemnized under the authority of the publication of banns. If you are having a religious ceremony, please check with the clergy prior to purchasing a marriage licence.
Getting your licence

One or both of you must visit a Registry Services office to get your licence. For the marriage licence to be issued the same day, you must have the completed and signed application form.
